From: E. Lowell Harris, Director, Exceptional Children

Re: Relocation of Governor's School East
Due to the need for exanded sumer services at
St. Andrews Presyterian College, the college and the Department of Public
Instruction jointly concluded that it was necessary to bring the 21 year
relationship to an end, and to relocate Governor's School East beginning
with the summer of 2000. I am pleased to announce that the Department of
Public Instruction had accepted the invitation of Meredith College to host
Governor's School East beginning with the upcoming session.
Letters were sent to the president of the
following institutions of higher education in eastern North Carolina to
investigate their interest in hosting Governor's School East: Elizabeth City
State University, East Carolina University, University of NC-Wilmington,
Fayetteville State University, NC State University, NC Wesleyan College, Mt.
Olive College, Shaw University, St. Augustine College, Meredith College,
Methodist College, and Peace College. The two institutions that expressed
interest were Meredith College and UNC-Wilmington. Visits were made to each
campus and the details were discussed. A letter of invitation was received
from Dr. Maureen Hartford, President of Meredith College. After close
examination of the existing summer academic program and the commitments
already made for the use of the campus, UNC-Wilmington determined that the
school would be unable to host Governor's School East.
We are grateful for the interest Dr. Hartford
and her staff have expressed in having Governor's School East at Meredith
College. The college has much to offer GSE, as does the Raleigh community.
We look forward to working out the details of the move, and we are anxious
for the Board of Governors to visit the campus. We anticipate introducing
Dr. Hartford at the our meeting after the first of the year. As you know,
the presidents of the host institutions serve as ex-officio members of the
Board of Governors.
